renovation of 3401 Market Street in 1965 gave the Science Center its first building,
but in 1968, when construction began on its first new building, 3508 Market Street,
the Center entered a building boom which would last more than a decade. The Monell
Chemical Senses Center, at 3500 Market Street, opened in 1971. Two years later,
the Regional Offices of the Federal Department of Health, Education and Welfare
occupied a new fourteen-story tower at 3535 Market Street. The Science Center's
administrative offices occupied a portion of the new building at 3624 Market Street
when it was completed in 1974. 3700 Market Street became the mid-Atlantic regional
headquarters for Otis Elevator when it opened in 1975. 37th Street, between Market
and Ludlow, became Founders Plaza in 1976. In 1978, when this collage of views
was printed, the Institute for Scientific Information had begun construction of
its corporate headquarters at 3501 Market Street and the Science Center was well
along in the planning phase for another new building, to be located at 3440 Market
Street (opened in 1981). {Artist
