LL.B. Diploma of John F. Brinton (1852)
LL.B. Diploma Awarded to John F. Brinton in 1852, one of the first diplomas awarded by the University of Pennsylvania Law School
[Translation of original Latin text] The Provost, Vice-Provost, and the Professors of the University of Pennsylvania send many greetings to all to whom these letters happen to come. Since John F. Brinton, a man known for his good brilliance and liberal learning and distinguished for his honest morals, has spent the accustomed time for studies in jurisprudence and assiduously has heard the lectures of the professors; and at an examination that was held and [then] in a written paper, he showed himself to be proficient in much so that it was suitable that he be admitted by us to the degree Bachelor in Laws, in the manner commanded by the illustrious Trustees of the University. We, therefore, the Provost, the Vice-Provost, and Professors of the University of Pennsylvania, by the authority vested in us by a writ of mandamus of the Trustees, at a solemn Commencement held on the second day of July in the eighteen hundred fifty second year after the birth of Christ have declared and established that the aforesaid man John F. Brinton is a Bachelor in Laws and by virtue of this present Diploma, we have ordered that he enjoy the particular rights, privileges, and honors pertaining to that particular degree. In witness thereof, the seal of the University to these letters has been affixed, and we have subscribed our names. [signed] George Sharswood, P. McCall, E. Spencer Miller, Professors; Henry Vethake,
Provost; John F. Frazer, Vice-Provost; Caldwell K. Biddle, Secretary
to the Trustees
