    Mark DeRosa was born in Passaic, New Jersey, on February 2, 1975. He graduated in 1993 from Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, New Jersey, where he earned All-State honors in both baseball and football.

    At the University of Pennsylvania, DeRosa again excelled at both baseball and football. He was Penn's starting quarterback for the 1993 to 1995 seasons and also played varsity baseball at Penn during his first three years, from 1994 until 1996. At the end of his junior year, DeRosa left Penn for the June 1996 free agent draft.

    DeRosa, a versatile fielder, was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 7th round of the 1996 amateur draft. He made his major league debut with the Braves on September 2, 1998, and played with them until the end of the 2004 season. After being granted free agency on December 21, 2004, he signed with the Texas Rangers on January 19, 2005.
