Maps: 1843 Map of the County of Philadelphia, by Charles Ellet, Jr.

"A Map of the County of Philadelphia from Actual Survey Made Under the Direction of Charles Ellet, Jr., Civil Engineer, and in Accordance with the Act of Assembly passed June 30th, 1839"

Courtesy of The Free Library of Philadelphia.

After the county was surveyed by D.H. Kennedy, C. Cramer drew the map. Their work was done under the direction of Civil Engineer, Charles Ellet, Jr., and published in 1843, the same year Ellet built the bridge over the Schuylkill River at Fairmount - the first large scale suspension bridge in the United States. The orientation of this map is to the northwest in order to fit the map unto four sheets. Blockley and Kingsessing townships, the core of West Philadelphia, are to the left.
