Temple's Guy Rodgers
Guy Rodgers was a remarkable playmaker for the Owls and as
a senior was a consensus All-American joining the likes of Wilt Chamberlain,
Elgin Baylor and Oscar Robertson. As a testament to his skill, in 1981,
23 years after his college career, he was picked as the best player
in Big Five history in a public poll conducted by the Philadelphia Daily
News. He is third on the all-time scoring list at TU with 1,767 points,
but Rodgers didn't just score, he once dealt out 20 assists in an NCAA
Tournament game against Southern Methodist. His backcourt mate in that
game, Hal Lear, scored 48 points. That 1955-56 backcourt of Lear and
Rodgers is still considered one of the best all-time. Lear and Rodgers
combined to average 43 points a game that season as the Owls advanced
to the Final Four.
