BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Dr. Edward Whitmer Loudon was born in Juniata, Pennsylvania, on March 4, 1874. He attended Gettysburg College where he earned a B.S. in 1896. The following year he entered the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine where he received his M.D. from Penn in 1901. After graduation Loudon returned to his hometown where he interned at the Altoona Hospital. Loudon spent his entire career in Altoona, where he served as medical examiner for Blair County Schools, the Prudential Insurance Company and as chief of the Altoona Tuberculosis Clinic. In addition, Dr. Loudon maintained a private practice in Altoona. In 1961 Penn bestowed on him the honor of “Distinguished Senior Alumnus” at the annual meeting of the Pennsylvania Medical Society. Loudon continued to work on a limited basis up until his death on January 31, 1964.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The Loudon Papers are a collection of notes and class materials taken and used by Dr. Edward Loudon during his time at University of Pennsylvania Medical School between the years 1899 and 1901. The collection is arranged chronologically, and covers a range of fields including ophthalmology, gross pathology, and laryngology from classes taught by Dr. Binney, Dr. Posey and Dr. Frazier. Also included in the collection are a number of slides used to identify various diseases from tissue samples of both humans and animals.
