ARRANGEMENT

The Davie Lion Drabkin Papers are organized into six series: Lecture Notes, Student Material, Correspondence, Design Plans for Equipment, Personal Reference Material, and Printed Material. All series are arranged alphabetically.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

David Lion Drabkin was born in 1899 in Mohilev, Russia. In 1919, he received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from the City College of New York. In 1924, he was graduated from Cornell University with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. In 1926, he was appointed as an Instructor in Physiological Chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. In 1930, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Physiological Chemistry (later Biochemistry), being promoted to Associate Professor in 1942 and Professor in 1946. In 1946, he became Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry of the Graduate School of Medicine, a position he held until his retirement from the University in 1968. 

As a researcher, Drabkin was known for his spectrophotometric investigations of hemoglobin, research of the role of enzymes in metabolism, and knowledge of the applications of photography to biochemical research. 

He died in 1981.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

These papers include lecture notes while teaching for the Graduate School of Medicine, 1946-1968 and for the Walter Reed Medical Center, 1950. Topics covered are: clinical acidosis, dietetics, malnutrition, the spleen, chemistry of the skin, treatment of protein deficient states, hypoproteinia and edema, re absorption of glucose acidification of urine, metabolism, vitamins, longevity, oxygen homeostasis, vomiting, diarrhea and dehydration, and ketosis. His research notes; correspondence with students, publishers, and friends; design plans for equipment; typescript drafts of manuscripts; and miscellaneous personal reference material as well as instrumentation manuals, operating instructions, and product literature may also be found among his papers.
