AGENCY HISTORY
The Office of Planned Giving originated during the 1974-1975 academic
year as part of the Development Department (now Development and Alumni
Relations), and encompassed two existing and one new subdivision of
that department. These included Bequests and Deferred Gifts, established
in 1958; the Memorial Gift Program, whose earliest division, the Friends
of the Library Program, traces its origins to 1933; and the newly-created
Life Income Trust Program, started in 1974 along with Planned Giving.
James D. Evans, Jr., the director of Bequests and Deferred Gifts, assumed
the same post with the new office. Deborah H. Blackmore succeeded him
in 1984, and subsequent heads have included John S. Foster, Deborah
S. Layton, Stuart P. Sullivan and, currently, Elaine Eberhart. As of
2000, the Office of Planned Giving is also referred to as Gift Planning.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The estate files are comprised of alumni, faculty, and other benefactors
who have included the University of Pennsylvania in their estate plans.
Most of the records in this collection are of people associated with
the university between 1900 and 1950 who have died within the past quarter
century, and include information from both before and after their deaths.
The types of documents primarily contained here are the wills of the
donors (and any trust agreements that may by applicable), gift and subscription
transmittal sheets, and letters to the donors acknowledging the university's
receipt of their gift.
