The position of VICE PRESIDENT FOR MEDICAL AFFAIRS was created in 1931, and was first held by Alfred Stengel, M.D. This University vice-president had charge of the University's Medical Division and directed the administrative and academic activities and affairs of the schools of Medicine, Dental Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, and Nursing; this Vice President also had charge of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. In 1972 the Trustees changed the title to VICE PRESIDENT FOR HEALTH AFFAIRS.
